Canyon County Election Results: Vehicle Fee Rejected, GOP Candidates Lead

CANYON COUNTY — Voters rejected a proposed local vehicle registration fee in the November 3 general election while Republican candidates held substantial leads in two county commission races. All reported vote totals in this review were unofficial November 4 returns.

The proposed vehicle fee failed with 58.8% voting against and 41.2% in favor, according to KIVI-TV. Had it passed, the measure would have established annual charges of $20 per motor or electric vehicle and $19 per motorcycle.

KIVI-TV reported an estimated $49 million funding shortfall among local highway jurisdictions in Canyon County. The proposal was expected to generate about $4.4 million annually for transportation projects and maintenance over a 20-year period. The election result leaves that particular funding mechanism unapproved.

County commission returns published by Decision Desk HQ on November 4 showed Republican Stewart Hyndman leading independent Jeffrey Skinner in District 1, 47,452 votes to 26,129, or 64.49% to 35.51%. In District 2, Republican Brad Holton led Democrat Brian Stroops by 51,133 to 23,890 votes, a 68.16% to 31.84% split.

Those candidate totals reflect DDHQ’s November 4 snapshot rather than a final certification. The November 4 figures are unofficial and will remain so until canvassing and certification.
