Simpson Backs Bill Requiring Plant-Based Products to Drop ‘Milk’ Label

Federal Labeling Standards

U.S. Rep. Mike Simpson has signed on to federal legislation that would bar manufacturers of almond, oat, and other plant-based beverages from using dairy terminology on their packaging.

The Idaho Republican joined Reps. John Joyce, R-Pennsylvania, and Josh Riley, D-New York, as a cosponsor of H.R. 8414. The measure would restrict the use of terms like “milk,” “cheese,” and “yogurt” to products derived from animal sources.

Simpson’s Statement

Simpson framed the issue as one of consumer transparency and nutritional clarity.

“Milk comes from a cow—not an almond or coconut or anything plant-based,” he said in a statement. “As we strive to Make America Healthy Again, consumers must be provided with honest nutritional labeling.”

District Agriculture

Idaho’s second congressional district includes major dairy operations, particularly in the Magic Valley region. Simpson cited his role representing dairy producers as a factor in his support for the legislation.

“I represent one of the most dairy-productive districts in the nation, and I remain committed to being a voice for dairy in Congress,” he said.

Prior Support

This is not Simpson’s first backing of such restrictions. He has previously cosponsored similar versions of the measure in past congressional sessions.

The legislation would impose federal labeling standards on non-dairy products currently marketed with dairy-associated terms. Enforcement mechanisms and penalties for violations were not detailed in the announcement.

What’s Next

The bill has been introduced in the House. Its prospects will depend on committee action and whether leadership schedules a floor vote. Similar proposals in previous sessions have drawn support from agricultural states but faced pushback from plant-based food manufacturers and retailers.
