The Snake River at Swan Falls recorded an average annual daily flow (AADF) of 4,292 cubic feet per second as of July 19, placing the reading 392 cfs above the current seasonal minimum requirement, according to the latest weekly measurement.
Current Reading and Minimum Requirements
Flow data is collected at the Murphy Gaging Station in southwestern Idaho. The summer minimum flow standard — in effect from April 1 through October 31 — stands at 3,900 cfs, meaning the river is presently running comfortably above that threshold.
The winter standard is considerably higher. From November 1 through March 31, the minimum required flow rises to 5,600 cfs, a level that reflects greater downstream demand and seasonal water management priorities under the Swan Falls Agreement.
How the Data Is Measured
The three-day average AADF is derived from historical flow records spanning 1981 through 2024, giving water managers a long-range baseline against which current conditions can be compared. Officials note that all data released in weekly updates are provisional and may be revised as additional measurements are processed.
Updates are published each Monday, though managers can increase the frequency of reporting if conditions warrant closer monitoring.
