House Approves Veterans Funding Package With Simpson’s Support
VA Healthcare and Benefits Receive Full Funding
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a spending measure for military construction and veterans affairs programs on Friday, sending the legislation to the Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support.
Idaho Rep. Mike Simpson voted for the fiscal year 2027 appropriations package, which passed 400-15. The measure provides complete funding for Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare services and benefit programs.
Mental Health and Family Housing Priorities
Simpson emphasized the bill’s focus on fulfilling commitments to service members and veterans. The legislation directs resources toward mental health services and suicide prevention initiatives, while also allocating money for military family housing improvements.
The congressman described supporting troops and veterans as among his highest priorities in Congress.
Second Amendment Protections Included
The appropriations package contains language preventing the VA from sharing veterans’ information with the FBI without judicial authorization. Supporters say the provision safeguards constitutional rights for those who served in uniform.
Senate Consideration Next
The spending bill now moves to the Senate for review and potential amendments. Annual military construction and veterans affairs appropriations measures typically receive strong support in both chambers.
Simpson represents Idaho’s Second Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee. He has held the seat since 1999, following six years as Idaho House Speaker.
