Republican Reps. Stephanie Mickelsen and Erin Bingham each secured renomination Tuesday in District 32’s two House primaries, defeating challengers by comfortable margins in a Bonneville County district that has been competitive within the GOP.

Seat A: Mickelsen over Golden

Mickelsen took 3,705 votes, or 57.21 percent, against Kelly Golden’s 2,771 votes, or 42.79 percent, in the Seat A race. Mickelsen said in a statement that the campaign had been hard-fought and thanked supporters and voters who turned out for the primary. Golden conceded earlier in the day in remarks to local reporters, saying her team had left everything in the field.

Seat B: Bingham over McKellar

Bingham took 3,673 votes, or 57.79 percent, in Seat B against Brian McKellar’s 2,683 votes, or 42.21 percent. McKellar sent a statement congratulating Bingham and thanking his campaign volunteers. Bingham emphasized service to Bonneville County in her own statement and said her focus would remain on representing the district in Boise.

November outlook

Mickelsen does not currently face a general-election challenger and is expected to return to the legislature unopposed in November. Bingham will face Democrat Kamber Weninger. District 32 covers parts of Idaho Falls and surrounding Bonneville County, a region whose growth has made it a focal point for state policy debates over property tax, growth management, and infrastructure spending.
