McGrane Reminds Idaho Advertisers of Disclosure Requirements

Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane on Tuesday reminded political advertisers to follow campaign-finance disclosure rules after his office received complaints involving Proposition 1 materials and text messages supporting a federal candidate.

The complaints about Proposition 1, a ballot measure seeking to expand abortion access in Idaho, concerned signs, handouts and stickers opposing the measure. No organization was identified as responsible for the materials that drew the complaints.

Joe Parris described the complaints as a “general reference” to the position on Proposition 1.

Federal Candidate Text Messages

McGrane’s office also received complaints about text messages endorsing a federal candidate. The messages addressed recipients as “fellow Democratic Socialist” but did not identify their sender or the entity that paid for them.

Boise Democratic Socialists denied involvement with the messages.

“Idaho’s campaign finance laws exist to shine a light on political spending,” McGrane said.

The Secretary of State’s Office encouraged advertisers to review applicable requirements for signs, posters, stickers, text messages and digital advertisements. Communications involving federal candidates fall under Federal Election Commission disclosure rules, and violations can bring substantial fines.
